Rohnert Park is unique in California, in that is is one of only two cities statewide where the police and fireMore department are one in the same. In other words, the city's public safety team serves as both police officers and firefighters.

This benefits the city for two main reasons—the department's versatility means Rohnert Park is just plain safer. A firefighter can get to a crime scene sooner if he or she is close, and a police officer can prevent a blaze sooner in the heat of the moment. Secondly, it saves the city money in a financial crisis—much needed with budgets being cut all over the city, from libraries and schools to road repair.

Rohnert Park has four fire stations and two engines are on hand at any given time. The line staff at the station is made up of 12 public safety officers, two sergeants and usually a community services officer.
