Weekend Planner: Group Gearing up for Fight Against Citizens United
Move to Amend Sonoma County will hold an organizing meeting in Santa Rosa this weekend. The group will be collecting signatures for a Sonoma County ballot initiative.
A group of Sonoma County residents is preparing to push back against a controversial Supreme Court ruling, and will be looking for volunteers this weekend.
Move To Amend Sonoma County, a local chapter of a national organization, will hold an organizing meeting 10 a.m. Saturday at the Arlene Francis Center, 99 6th Street, Santa Rosa.
The group's goal will be to get an initiative on a county ballot asking Sonoma County state and federal representatives to push for a constitutional amendment to overturn the 2010 Citizens United U.S. Supreme Court decision. That case held corporations, associations and labor unions have a First Amendment right to unrestricted campaign spending.
"Move to Amend's We the People Amendment (House Joint Resolution 29) was introduced into the U.S. Congress in February 2013, but we know that Congress will not pass this amendment on its own," the Sonoma County group said in an event posting on Patch. "They are too reliant on campaign contributions from corporations and the super-rich to risk rocking the boat. Move to Amend chapters are placing resolutions like ours on local ballots throughout the U.S. to build massive grassroots pressure for passage of this important Constitutional Amendment."
