Is the Rohnert Park Farmers Market the Best in the Country?

Nationwide contest runs until Sept. 3 to pick the best of the best

The Rohnert Park farmers market may only have just begun, but already it's garnering plenty of local attention. Now the market has an opportunity to get a little national attention.

A new national contest is underway now, and the winner will be determined by voters.

American Farmland Trust, a non-profit group focused on conserving agricultural land, is running its fourth annual America's Favorite Farmers Markets contest this summer.

The contest asks shoppers to vote for the farmers market they like best from a list of more than 7,000 provided by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. However, Rohnert Park is not on the list. But it can be. By filling out the form, the Rohnert Park Farmers Market could be added to the list.

Vote for Rohnert Park here

Voting ends at midnight on Sept. 3 and winners will be chosen in each of four categories: small, medium, mid-size and large. American Farmland Trust will throw a party for each of the winning markets.

There's also an essay contest in which farmers can write about why participating in markets is important to them, for a chance to win $1,000.

So how about it, Fair Oaks? Should cities nationwide bow to our farmers market excellence, or what? Click here to vote, and share your thoughts in the comments.

I don't think it would even be in the running. There are no flower vendors. Jams, jellies and speciality items would be nice. There use to be a pickle vendor there, but he is gone. I think that there are great things for the kids. The pony rides are great. There just should be more vendors there. I can walk it in a few minutes because nothing is that interesting to me. Just a few I like.

I was rather disappointed in the RP farmer's market. Great selection of food "trucks" and activities for the kids, but the purpose of a farmer's market to me is to buy fresh produce. The selection of produce was so small it seems like the point was totally missed. Maybe farmer's markets up here just don't have the same purpose as those in southern CA.

This year has started slow with a lot less produce vendors then it seemed like we had in the past year. At least as I remember it.

The Festa Italiana was last weekend. It was OK, most food booths were ripoffs. Not enough tables orRead More food choices. Hardly any cars at the car show. I really hope they do better next year. I could be a great event with more planning.
