Oscar Grant Family Attorney To Discuss Race And Due Process At SSU

Oscar Grant's family attorney, John Burris, will make an appearance at Sonoma State University to discuss race and due process on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

Accomplished civil rights attorney John Burris plans to address Sonoma State University at an event entitled “Oscar Grant and Trayvon Martin: Intersection of Race and Due Process.”

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at noon in the Evert B. Person theatre at Sonoma State University.

Burris is a well-respected lawyer who most recently represented the family of Oscar Grant who was fatally shot by a BART police officer in 2009.

He has also served as counsel for the class action lawsuit involving the Oakland Police Department Riders, a group of OPD officers accused of planting evidence and false arrests amongst other charges.

According to Burris, his work against the Oakland Police Department has led to continuing reforms within the department.

He also provided legal support for Barry Bonds, Tupac Shakur, as well as numerous public officials like Earl Sanders, the former San Francisco chief of police.

Burris also recently published a book titled “Blue vs. Black: Let’s End the Conflict between Police and Minorities.”

Burris’ presentation at Sonoma State University is part of the new Africana Lecture Series sponsored by SSU’s American Multicultural Studies Department.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Sonoma State University is located at 1801 East Cotati Avenue, Rohnert Park, CA 94928. A $5 daily parking fee is required to park on campus.
