Credo Enrollment Rising

Rohnert Park school one of only three public Waldorf high schools in the country

It’s been nearly two years since Credo High opened at the former El Camino High School site and enrollment has steadily grown, doubling to 80 students this year.

Come fall, the Waldorf-inspired public high school will gain even more students, bringing the total to 130, said Principal Chip Romer.

That’s good news for Credo, which has struggled with low enrollment and, as a result, its funding. To attract new students, Credo has held four open houses and done a lot of outreach to local K-8 schools over the past year.

“Happy parents and students talk to other, that’s the best form of advertising,” Romer said Monday.

The school is also in the process of obtaining accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, which Credo expects next winter. Without accreditation, accrued credits may not count if a student transfers to another school.

Credo is one of only three public Waldorf schools in the country and has a demanding college-prep curriculum. Students take science courses each year and are required to study music, arts and “world language,” besides English, that is.

Nontraditional classes cover everything from history of theater and economics to numbers theory, printmaking, blacksmithing and farming.

The school received a score of 822 on the State Academic Performance Index in 2012, making it the third highest performing public high school in Sonoma County, according to Romer.
