Board Okays Reopening of Two Schools in Rohnert Park

Mountain Shadows, La Fiesta to be reopened under reconfigured models

At last night's school board meeting,  the Cotati Rohnert Park Unified School District approved the reopening of two schools in the district, according to the Press Democrat.

The two 4-0 votes mean the former Mountain Shadows Middle School on Burton Avenue will open in the fall to an inaugural class of sixth- and seventh-graders under the name Technology Middle School. Eighth-graders will be added to the campus in 2014-15.

In a separate unanimous vote, trustees approved the reopening of the shuttered La Fiesta Elementary School campus as University Elementary School at La Fiesta in a partnership with Sonoma State University. The inaugural group of 48 students will serve kindergarten through second grade.

Although enrollment in the district has fallen in recent years, and the supervisors recognized that closing schools was not always in the best interest of education.

Of the three elementary schools shuttered in recent years, Gold Ridge Elementary remains the only one to remain closed. It recently transferred to the City of Rohnert Park for recreational programs.
