Year-round classes start in less than two weeks at Evergreen Elementary School

For some kids in Rohnert Park summer will have a rather abrupt end at the end of this month. Starting on July 25 year round classes will begin for grades K through 5 at Evergreen Elementary. This pilot program was put into effect last spring after a unanimous vote from the school board.

The idea was to make the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District more appealing to parents in the area and reduce the number of students transferring out to nearby schools.

One of the reasons some parents chose to take their children out of the district was for the option of year round school which has been offered in nearby schools such as Penngrove Elementary School. While so far the program is more of an experiment, it has been met with positive enthusiasm from many of the parents at Evergreen Elementary.

Initially entering into the classes is voluntary. A survey was sent out to existing parents and they marked their preference for the coming school year. From there estimates were made about which grades would have enough students to fill a class. Grades K through 5 were able to create full classes while the 6th grade was not. At Evergreen there are 3 classes per grade level.

With classes starting in less than two weeks parents are getting a jump on back-to-school shopping. A suggested list of school supplies is posted on the Evergreen School website. Also if you are unsure which teacher and classroom your child will be in you can call the school at (707) 588-5715 and check. Parents and students in the Kindergarten class will be having an Introductory Tea on Tuesday, July 24 to introduce themselves to their teacher and the classroom.

The main difference in the year round schedule and traditional is the earlier start time as well as a two-week break in September. Other vacation schedules will then match up with the normal district calendar to allow families the ability to take vacations at the same time regardless of which grade level their children may be in. This particular schedule is not a typical 45-15 schedule. It is modeled after the schedule currently used at Penngrove Elementary.

You can view both calendars at the District Website.
