You Tell Us: Where are Rohnert Park's Most Dangerous Intersections?

Rohnert Park citizens cry out for a safer crosswalk across the street from Sunrise Park.

A group of Rohnert Park moms are outraged at the city's response to the safety of the crosswalk where a two-year-old was run over and killed two weeks ago. City Manager Gabe Gonzalez reported at last night's City Council meeting that there's no immediate danger to people crossing at the intersection of Medical Center Drive and Snyder Lane.

The police investigation is ongoing, Gonzalez said, but the city found no prior accidents in that crosswalk and the city is unaware of any previous complaints about the safety of that crosswalk.

Katie Weber and Michelle Ross disagree. The two moms have kids in Rohnert Park's schools, and they're afraid that something like this could happen to them if the city doesn't act to make the busy intersection safer.

"This is a city of families," Weber said. "We're furious."

Every morning around 7 a.m., and every afternoon around 3 p.m., Weber and Ross don a shared neon yellow vest and help pedestrians cross safely in the crosswalk — one that's adjacent to four schools: Redwood County Kids Club, Learning to Learn preschool, Lawrence E. Jones Middle School and Rancho Cotate High School.

"I'm a mom of twins," Ross said. "I went to the meeting last night to tell them that this intersection is dangerous. I've been here for six years, and it always has been."

"I feel responsible for this accident too. I knew and I did nothing; didn't write a letter to the city or open my mouth," Ross said. "But I can't sit back anymore."

Weber and Ross have banded together with a small group of neighbors. Together they took nearly 2,000 signatures to the City Council meeting last night. Warner Hepsley, 75, who lives nearby, started gathering signatures hours after the accident took place Dec. 1.

Calli Murray, 2, was killed and her mother Ling, 40, was severely injured when they were run over by 18-year-old Sonoma State student Kaitlyn Dunaway, who police have confirmed was using her phone while driving.
