Should the Rohnert Park City Council Appoint Its Next Members?

On Wednesday morning, the Rohnert Park City Council is expected to adopt a resolution that calls for the appointment of three city council members, each running unopposed in the November election.

Should the Rohnert Park City Council appoint its members or run an election for the voters to decide?

That's the question on the table for the RP City Council Wednesday during a special meeting. Since incumbents Gina Belforte, Jake Mackenzie and Joe Callinan are running unopposed during the November election, the city will be considering cancelling the election in favor of appointing its members.

It's a move that's sure to save the city some money, since there is no competition for the incumbents. Rohnert Park Assembly of God Pastor Chip Worthington was the only other person to have pulled papers, but did not file those papers in time for the Aug 10 deadline.

The special meeting will take place at 10 a.m., Wednesday,at the Rohnert Park City Council chambers located at 130 Avram Ave.

Is this a paying gig? Were these jobs advertised at all? I would have certainly filed the papers had i known about it. I could use the job and i am more than Confident i could do better than the current crop of council members.

I can see why it might make sense to save money on an election. However, a bad economic situation isn't a valid reason to bypass the democratic process. Even tho the council people seem to be unopposed, the election should proceed to allow for any opposing write-ins, of which I =pray= there are!

Hey Jake: Good job of throwing Sandra Lipitz under the bus in favor of Gabe Gozalez. You and the rest of your council members should be very proud of yourself. Maybe you will get thrown under a bus some day!
