Groundbreaking This Afternoon for Train Deport and Pedestrian Plaza in Cotati

The $1.6 million train depot is expected to take 170 construction days to complete.

Cotati officials will break ground this afternoon on a new $1.6 million train depot and pedestrian plaza.

The 1,500-square-foot depot building and landscaped pedestrian plaza at East Cotati Avenue and Santero Way is the site of the future Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit, SMART, commuter train station. It is expected to take 170 construction days to complete.

The $1.6 million grant is from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

The project for a new Transit Center is a partnership among the City of Cotati, Sonoma County Transit and SMART. It will serve Cotati, Rohnert Park and Sonoma State University, linking bus, rail, pedestrian and bicycle travelers with retail services.

The construction will be done in phases.

"This project enables Cotati, along with our partner agencies, to create a regional Transit Center that will provide the viable options necessary to reduce congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse gases," Cotati

Councilwoman and Sonoma County Transportation Authority board member Pat Gilardi said.
