City to Unveil Military Banners at the Community Center Friday

The public is invited to the city's inaugural military banner program, launching Friday, March 16 at noon at City Center Plaza. The unveiling of the first 10 banners comes six months after the idea was first presented to the City Council by local resident Andy Durkee.

The commemorative banners honor soldiers who are either from Rohnert Park, or who have relatives who reside or work in town, according to Durkee.

"This broadens the scope and includes those who contribute to the business environment of our community," he said.

Durkee says he introduced the idea because he was inspired by the armed forces banners displayed in other Southern California.

The initial 10 banners will be on display Friday, and will be installed near the library a few days later. During the ceremony, families of the honorees will be present. A color guard and guest speaker from the Coast Guard Training Center in Petaluma will also be present.
