Chamber of Commerce Celebrates Local Heroes

The Chamber for the first time Wednesday recognized local business and city government leaders.

The Rohnert Park Chamber of Commerce Wednesday recognized trailblazing businesses and city leaders — those who give back to the local community and are invested in Rohnert Park's future. Michael Newell, who heads the , announced the awards. Here they are:

Large business of the year: Costco Wholesale.

"Costco is a generous supporter of the community," Newell said. "They give to local schools, nonprofits, help students in need with backpack donations ... and are active in the Chamber of Commerce." Costco also donates to the Children's Miracle Network and the United Way.

Small business of the year: Sally Tomatoes.

"Sally Tomatoes is a small business, but it's a small business with a big heart," Newell said. The restaurant and catering company, located at Sonoma Mountain Village, is active in numerous community organizations, including the Active 20-30 Club of the North Bay, the Planning Commission, the Rotary Club of Rohnert Park-Cotati and the Education Foundation.

Volunteer of the year: Anne Mogel.

In addition to working two part-time jobs, Mogel is active in volunteering in the community.

Nonprofit of the year: Goodwill Industries.

"This nonprofit is making a big difference," Newell said. The program to divert e-waste from landfills since 2005 has saved more than a million pounds of recyclable waste away from landfills. In addition, the local branch employs 25 people with disabilities.

"Goodwill empowers clients to overcome barriers and become an important part of the Sonoma County workforce," he added. "These are people who want a chance, not charity."

City employee of the year: Gabe Gonzalez, city manager.

Gonzalez, who took over as city manager in August of 2010, has made significant changes in the city's local economy and business climate, Newell said.

"He brings stability, an energetic approach and strong financial background to Rohnert Park," he added. "We're lucky to have him."

In addition to creating an economic development team, Gonzalez has reduced the city's $7 million deficit last year. This year, the city projected a $2.5 million deficit, however, it's since been balanced, Gonzalez has said.

Newell said Gonzalez is leading the way, bringing in jobs, revenue and businesses to the city.
