Update: Police Scouring Annadel State Park for Missing Sonoma State Student

James Abriel, 19, has been officially missing since April 25.

Search and rescue teams are scouring the hills near Annadel State Park in Santa Rosa today after a car belonging to a missing Sonoma State University Student was found there Thursday night, Walnut Creek police Sgt. Tom Cashion said.

The student, 19-year-old James Abriel, was last seen in Walnut Creek on April 21, police said.

A friend reported that the student, who has family in Orinda and Walnut Creek, was missing and possibly suicidal, police said.

A handgun also went missing from a Walnut Creek residence and police believe Abriel may have it.

Cashion said Abriel left suicide notes both his residences in Sonoma State University and Walnut Creek. Police said the suicide notes mention a recent breakup.

Taylor Dickinson, a friend of Abriel's, said he seemed fine before he left.

"He was just typical, normal James," Dickinson said. "I'm really concerned, and I didn't know how to react. I knew that they had broken up before, but he said it was for the best."

After Abriel's white Toyota Camry was found Thursday night near the park, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office search and rescue team began looking for him with help from search and rescue teams from Contra Costa, Marin and Napa counties.

Cashion said teams were searching Annadel State Park, which covers about 5,000 acres, as well as the adjacent Spring Lake Regional Park, with helicopters, dogs and all-terrain vehicles.

He estimated that about 65 people were involved in the search.

Family and friends have been searching for Abriel since April 25. According to Susan Kashack, a Sonoma State University spokesperson, his parents have also been looking for clues to his whereabouts on campus.

Right now, police are just hoping to find Abriel alive, Cashion said. Abriel is described as a white male with blond hair and blue eyes. He is 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs 180 pounds. Anyone with any information regarding Abriel's disappearance or current location are urged to call 911 or the Walnut Creek Police Department at 925-935-6400, case number 11-13034.
