Santa Rosa: Charcoal Briquettes Spark Small Grass Fire

Coals were disposed of improperly.

By Bay City News Service

Firefighters responded to a small vegetation fire that started as a result of hot charcoal briquettes dumped in a field in Santa Rosa Monday afternoon, fire officials said.

Firefighters received reports of a vegetation fire near the decommissioned Naval Air Station at Northpoint Parkway and Doolittle Street. Upon arrival firefighters reported a quarter acre grass fire in the field off Northpoint Parkway caused by charcoal briquettes that were disposed of incorrectly. The fire was contained to 1.5 acres and no structures were threatened during the fire. Property damage was limited to a wooden fence along Northpoint Parkway, fire officials said.

Fire officials said charcoal briquettes should always be allowed to completely cool and be placed into a metal container for disposal.
