Poll: Would You Support Video Surveillance in Your Neighborhood?

The Department of Public Safety is seeking community feedback on whether or not residents would support cameras in public places to increase neighborhood safety.

The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety is exploring a concept to put video cameras up in Rohnert Park, and local police and fire authorities are asking for the public's response to neighborhood surveillance — what do you think?

How do you feel about surveillance cameras in public places? Local authorities are "thinking about" planting cameras at places like busy intersections, problem crime areas and local parks. The idea is, they could catch crimes in progress, take video of accidents and even tape local sports games, police and fire officials said.

"For example, would the public like to have a camera at one of the parks so they could watch a game?" said Fire Marshal Dan Adam. "Or possibly do a live feed of the City Center plaza, during the Farmers Market?"

Officers said they could be moved around, based even on citizen or local business owner complaints. But they could also be used for community good, like taping a community garden in progress — to use another example.
