Police Ticket Nine Speeders Monday, Continue to Beef Up Enforcement

The Department of Public Safety will continue speeding stings on busy throughfares through 2012.

Police said today that officers ticketed nine speeders in a five-hour period on heavily-traveled city throughfares — continuing the effort launched by the Department of Public Safety early this year to crack down primarily on speeders and distracted drivers.

The ramped-up enforcement stings are funded by a $73,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Monies are used to put more officers out on the streets — to use radar guns to track problem speeding areas, such as on Rohnert Park Expressway, and conduct sobriety checkpoints.

Officers Monday stopped 11 drivers between 1 and 6 p.m. Nine were issued citations for speeding, one for driving without a valid license. One driver reportedly was driving 57 in a 35 mph area.
