Police Sieze Illegal Weapons From B Section Home

A convicted felon was arrested Friday after he accidentally fired a gun inside his Rohnert Park house, leading police to discover that he possessed several illegal weapons.

Police responded to a home on Bridgit Drive shortly before 11 p.m. after receiving reports that a man in the house was drunk and had shot a gun inside the residence.

The officers were greeted by a woman who walked out of the house with two rifles in her hand. Police determined that one of the rifles was a pellet gun and the other was a .50-caliber black powder rifle.

The woman told police that her boyfriend, 36-year-old Shawn Robert Kaffun, had accidentally fired the black powder rifle while he was showing it to a friend.

She said the friend had left but that Kaffun was still inside the house with their 9-year-old son.

The woman helped police coax Kaffun out of the house, and police said he appeared to have been drinking.

Police checked the house to make sure no one was injured, and found a bullet hole in the kitchen floor and ammunition in Kaffun's bedroom.

Police said Kaffun had previously been convicted of shooting a firearm at an inhabited dwelling, a felony, in 1998 and is prohibited from owning a gun or ammunition.

Kaffun was arrested for felony negligent discharge of a firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, and for violating the terms of his probation.

Kaffun was booked into Sonoma County Jail. Officers obtained a search warrant for the house to find any other firearms he might have been keeping. Officers then discovered an AR-15 assault rifle with a grenade launcher in his bedroom closet, along with other illegal weapons. The rifle had been reported stolen in Idaho, police said.

Police confiscated the illegal weapons, and the woman and the couple's son were allowed to return home.
