Police Arrest Man Suspected of Drunken Driving After Hitting Light Pole

The accident happened around 6 a.m. Sunday, according to police.

Police arrested a Cotati man suspected of drunken driving after hitting a light pole in a residential neighborhood early Sunday morning, Rohnert Park police said.

Carlos Murcia, 21, was arrested after an off-duty Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety officer reported a possible hit-and-run on Roman Drive at the entrance to Regents Circle at about 6 a.m., police said.

The officer went to check out the crash, when he saw a vehicle with major front-end damage, police said.

Walking away from the vehicle was Murcia and another person, according to police.

When responding officers found Murcia, he allegedly told police he crashed into the light pole at the entrance to Regents Circle when he tried to make the turn at too high of a speed, police said.

Officers believed Murcia displayed signs of alcohol intoxication, and police arrested him for suspicion of driving under the influence. His blood alcohol content was allegedly more than two times the legal limit at the time of his arrest, according to police.

No one was injured in the crash.
