Investigation Continues in to Kevin 'Ziggy' Craft Killing

Detectives said they hope to bring the case before the district attorney's office by the beginning of September.

Rohnert Park police are still investigating the killing of 20-year-old Kevin C. Craft, who was found dead in the early morning hours of April 22 in the parking lot of Best Western Inn on Redwood Drive in Rohnert Park.

Friends and family called the kid known as Ziggy — a Rohnert Park native — calm, selfless and patient. Days after he was gunned down, .

Sgt. Jeff Nicks, who oversees the Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety's investigation bureau, said police have submitted evidence for analysis by the Department of Justice in Santa Rosa.

"Some DNA testing needs to be done, and there is some fingerprint evidence being looked at," Nicks said. "We can't disclose anything more than that at this point. The case is still under investigation."

Nicks said he and detective Kelly Koffler, who is in charge of the investigation, are "getting ready" to send the final police report to the district attorney's office by Sept. 1.

"Sometimes even pending analysis of evidence, we'll send the report to the DA's office," Nicks said. "Hopefully at that point the district attorney will make a decision on whether or not to file criminal charges."

But Nicks said it's ultimately up to the district attorney whether or not to file charges. Chief Deputy District Attorney Bill Brockley is handling the case, Nicks said.

"He may not have a decision right away," Nicks added.

Nicks said police have a potential suspect, or suspects, possibly from the Sacramento or Citrus Heights area, and evidence in connection with the homicide was found in Citrus Heights shortly after the killing.

Surveillence video released a week after Craft was killed showed two potential suspects, though Nicks didn't confirm if either of the two in the video were still under investigation.

"The two people depicted in this surveillance video are of interest to the Rohnert Park police department, in the homicide investigation of 20-year-old Kevin C. Craft," Nicks said May 1. "The female subject in the video has been identified as Kimberly Monet Christian of Citrus Heights. The male subject has yet to be identified."

Nicks said it's not rare for investigations of this caliber to take this long. It's been nearly four months.

"These types of homicide investigations are very labor intensive and very tedious; we need to make sure we're prepared," Nicks said. "We've been collecting evidence and doing interviews, no matter where that takes us — whether it's Rohnert Park, in Sonoma County or somewhere like Sacramento."

Editor's note: Stay tuned for updates after Sept. 1 from the district attorney's office.
