Criminal Proceedings Suspended in Attempted Murder of Guardian Case

Micah Hughes, 20, was arrested in Rohnert Park after repeatedly stabbing Mitchell Davis April 30.

A Sonoma County Superior Court Judge suspended criminal proceedings today against a man accused of trying to kill his guardian.

A psychiatrist will exam the defendant, Micah Hughes, to determine if he is competent to stand trial and participate in his defense. Judge Robert LaForge is scheduled to make that decision June 17.

Hughes, 20, is charged with the attempted murder of 51-year-old Mitchell Davis, who was stabbed 10-12 times in a vehicle at Santa Rosa Avenue and Todd Road in unincorporated Sonoma County around 7:15 p.m. on April 30.

He was arrested two days later after Rohnert Park police received an anonymous tip Hughes was seen wandering around Benicia Park in Rohnert Park.

Police found Hughes sitting on a knoll near the Boys and Girls Club of Rohnert Park on Santa Barbara Avenue.

Hughes grandmother Joy Hughes, of Santa Rosa, said he has suffered from mental illness since he was three years old.

She said she relinquished care of her grandson to Davis and his wife when Hughes was seven years old because she had difficulty dealing with his illness.

Davis knew her grandson from a children's treatment center, she said.
