2 Head-On Collisions on Calistoga Road Send 5 to Hospital, Including Aussie Motorist on Wrong Side of Road

In one of the crashes, a male driver visiting from Australia pulled onto the road and began driving his rented SUV in the left lane, as he would in his native country, CHP says.

Five people ended up in the hospital after two head-on collisions on Calistoga Road in Santa Rosa on Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP responded to the first collision at 6:25 a.m. on Calistoga Road near Alpine Road, said CHP Officer Jonathan Sloat.

Hugo Martinez, 30, of Santa Rosa, was apparently driving a Honda Prelude at an unsafe speed heading east on Calistoga Road, according to the CHP's preliminary investigation.

As it passed around a curve, the Honda crossed the double yellow lines and came into the path of a Ford Focus driven by Joseph Moug, 46, heading west, Sloat said.

The cars crashed, and the Ford ran off the road and overturned in a creek, Sloat said.

Moug was able to get out of the car, and both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Sloat.

Martinez was cited for driving without a license, and the road was partially blocked until 8:40 a.m.

At 8:55 a.m., there was another collision on Calistoga Road near St. Helena Road.

A male driver visiting from Australia pulled onto the road and began driving his rented SUV in the left lane, as he would in his native country, Sloat said.

A Ford Mustang heading the opposite way came around a curve and struck the SUV head-on, Sloat said.

The Mustang's driver, Ryan Cervantes, 29, and passenger, Alberto Valencia, 28, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, as was the driver of the SUV, Sloat said.
