What should Rohnert Park do with the Friendly City sign?

What do you think? Take our informal poll.

Recently we have been trying to determine what image would be a good representation of Rohnert Park for the Rohnert Park Patch's Facebook timeline. One of the pictures that received the most views, likes, and comments was the original, "Rohnert Park the Friendly City" sign that sits just off the freeway on the south end of town.

But many residents commented on Facebook that the sign needs to be updated, replaced, or even moved to a better location. So what do you think we should do about the sign? Is this something the city should look into to coincide with our 50th Anniversary Celebration in September?

Let's hear from the public on any other great ideas or thoughts on the subject in the Comments section below!

Do away with the Sign. Rohnert Park isn't the friendly city anymore. Used to be 20 years ago... However Rohnert Park is becoming like little inner city. To many sirens. Few friendly officers.. Well one KC Thompson is a great officer and should be the new officer friendly
Wanda July 07, 2012 at 06:57 PM
I concur! I know people who call Rohnert Park "Little Vallejo".
Janette Brown July 07, 2012 at 06:58 PM
disagree. First as I said would not cost much at all to fix up the sign why I bet alot of people ...myself include would donate their time to help. Second I have lived in RP since the 60's and it is what YOU make it . It is everyone's job to start being nicer people......as far as what I have seen I LOVE ROHNERT PARK! beautiful parks , bike paths, and friendly friendly people ! I have not run into all these "rude" people. I love it here . And my advise to anyone who does not like Rohnert Park is to please do us all a favor and move .
Janette Brown July 07, 2012 at 07:02 PM
who is all these people that say RP is a little Vallejo???....everyone I see loves RP.. Like I said if you dont like RP please dont bitch ...move because the people who love it here and have pride in their city do not want people around who bitch.....either help to improve the city or leave !!~!!

I volunteer at my childs school every year. I help those in need. I am kind to people and animals. I do not deserve to be abused in any way. When I told my childs principal and teachers at the school I was looking for a new home, they begged me not to go. If dog owners would clean up after their pets Im sure the parks would be more inviting. Also the used condoms and garbage we see in the park on the way to school should be picked up. How is a ten year old responsible for any of this?
Wanda July 07, 2012 at 08:01 PM
Using profanity is rude.
Janette Brown July 07, 2012 at 09:20 PM
bitch.....a profanity??.....a bitch is a bitch and by the way its also a female dog. And if you think telling the truth that we do not need people around who BITCH but who pitch in and help to make this a better city ....then consider it what it is ....I just do not know a better word for people who "BITCH" PERIOD.
I took the advice of others and moved to a freindler city, well town.
Janette Brown July 08, 2012 at 03:18 PM
Good we have the best city around and glad the negative are gone ! Don't need that here .
Lilly July 09, 2012 at 05:02 AM
So you're telling her to "stop female-dog-ing"? Speaking objectively, you sound as if you are one of the "rude people" she was referring to.
Denise S. July 09, 2012 at 02:26 PM
I agree with Janette. I have lived in RP my whole life. My husband and I go for bike rides ALL around RP every day. We also do a lot of shopping and eating out. I have NEVER had problems with anybody. The bike paths in RP, while they do need some work done to them (cracks, tree roots exposed, etc.) they are quite nice to have and I have never encountered problems on them. I feel very safe here in RP.
Denise S. July 09, 2012 at 02:27 PM
Amen to that!! If you don't like it, leave!!

Yep! No casinos!

Your attitude is remarkable. I haven't encountered issues with the city, so the issues anyone else encounters is indicative of them bitching. You tell them they need to contribute and be a part of the solution, while everything Wanda said seems to indicate that she is the type of person you WANT to populate your city. You ignore, without reply, her comments towards hostility she has received and conditions of the area with a simple 'Well, that doesn't happen to me.' This makes it seem like you are decidedly a part of the problem, whereas she has at least referenced her volunteer work by way of her children's school. You argue vehemently that your city is friendly, have you considered asking her any questions to help determine why she disagrees? That'd be pretty friendly, I think.

I think the suggestion someone made on moving the sign to where the old states farm sign is, is a great idea. It would be closer to where the new train station might be and all who get off the train there would be able to see it. The current location worked ok in the early days of Rohnert Park because we were trying to attract folks to move here. That has all changed now. As far as Rohnert Park being little Vallejo, there are sections of town that do I think we all know where those sections are without naming them here. I also have lived here since the 60's. I was born and raised in Marin county but found I needed to move from there to Rohnert Park because it was way too expensive living in Marin. Alot of the people I went to high school with also ended up moving up here for the same reasons. My wife has mentioned at various times that she has run into some pretty rude folks while shopping. What we have found is it depends on where one shops. Out of necessity, ($) we purchase our pet supply's from Wal-Mart and that is where most of the rudeness has occurred, I will not go into why that may be. However we do most of our other shopping at Olivers and Costco. Olivers is great no hassles no problem. Costco because of its size and customer population can be a problem because folks who just want to move slowly at their own pace kinda get run over there and not always. There are some snobby folks who think they are "Entitled" but generally this is still a fairly friendly town.
don July 09, 2012 at 08:42 PM
Now this is a useful suggestion. They may well be willing to help pay for this! The ill informed folks who say "NO casino's" need to understand; The casino is going in, and there is not a darn thing they can do about it! So, rather then cut off your nose to spite your face why not ask the tribe to help with the sign.
Janette Brown July 09, 2012 at 08:48 PM
My opinion stands... I and many others like Rohnert Park. If someone does not like it leave ....that simple....either you are part of the problem or part of the solution. I really do not care if someone approves of my statements or not ...and I do not really care when someone bitches about things ....its just talk unless they can back it up with helpful suggestions not just RP does this wrong and RP does that wrong. I am willing to be of any help I can ..committees or time ! If you can say that then I would be more open to your words .
Brandon Christmann July 09, 2012 at 09:05 PM
There are some matters that do not have suggestions that can easily be implemented. Take the complaints of rude and vulgar behavior. What would be a helpful suggestion in that situation? The only thing that immediately comes to mind to me would be either violence or legislation against rude comments - neither of which are legal, moral, or practical. You say that if someone has issues, they should leave. That's horrible to say given your argument for a friendly city. You wish to be involved, but say that they need their own solutions to issues they have. We seem to have a Forum right here, why not talk with them about issues and discuss solutions? The more people presenting these matters the more weight they have. Some of the issues that have been listed are either not something a person should have to deal with, or simply can't. I can volunteer all the time in the world and still not have the means to repair poor road conditions. A matter of dog droppings not being picked up should NEVER be replied to with 'Well, clean it up.'

Brandon; Bravo! Well said! So ms. Brown, I am curious as to how long you have been in this area, if you don't mind. or not its all good just wondering.
Janette Brown July 09, 2012 at 09:46 PM
We are a friendly city .....and that is why we need to quit complaining !
Janette Brown July 09, 2012 at 09:48 PM
Don all my life ............and you ?
don July 09, 2012 at 10:01 PM
Never mind ms Brown I just scanned your comment at the top of the page, so you have been here since the 60's. Ten you of all folks know; Rohnert Park HAS changed. It has grown and it also has a more diverse population. It's not all white as it was in the early days. I feel the implementation of prop 13 ruined this and many other small towns in California.I also gather from your comments you do not live in the "A" section or in one of the "older" parts of town. People of color do not experience this town as all that friendly.
don July 09, 2012 at 10:56 PM
Ms. Brown, I have been here since the 60's. My people have been here for century's. I am a California native. I do understand you wanting folks to step up and contribute if they have complaints about RP. It also sounds like you have been active in this community for a long time and when a person complains about this community it hurts because it doesn't acknowledge the work that you have put into the community. However the answer is to not chase people away. There is a lot of " I don't really care " attitude and actions that occur here. As much as I don't like saying this; It's mostly the younger generations of people, the "Entitled" or so they think, generations that I see and hear in this community that have these attitudes. There is blatant disregard for their community and the people around them.

4:21 pm on Monday, July 9, 2012 Don true its does bother me when people put RP down. I love it here raised my kids here . And have a lot of good memories here. I am old school in that I HATE complainers ! Nothing gets accomplished if you just complain. I just don't see what you are seeing with people not caring here....maybe its because I choose to surround myself with positive people that I do not see what you see in our community. Have you lived in RP in the 60's ? perhaps if you did I know you? Did you go to the Ranch? I hope you believe that me disagreeing with some people here does not reflect on my liking them or not...I do not even know them...I take this forum as a exchange of ideas .....granted some times a heated exchange but disagreements can be healthy...and I do listen to other people's sides and even if I do not say so I do think over what they say ....I like a good discussion . That said we have most likely beat this discussion to death ! All I know is I am not going to give up on RP because once you do the other side wins....Wish everyone well and God bless.
sasha chidlowsky July 11, 2012 at 11:19 PM
get rid of it! there are too many Rohnert park signs anyways,it also distracts drivers
Sandra Emch Knoy July 12, 2012 at 11:34 PM
FWIW, I am a new resident of RP and have had a fine experience here in the past few months. My kids and I are often out at parks and we walk to dinner and shopping at least once a week. As "the new girl" in town, I've been pleasantly surprised by RP. As far as the sign, I would suggest repairing & moving it to a more visible location. Would also be nice to know the story about the city's nickname - who gave it, when, why, etc.
