Streaming Radio: Perfect for Students and Neighbors

SSU's Monday morning radio wakes the community up.

There’s a lot right with having a university in the neighborhood. We get easy access student entertainment like theatre, dance and music productions at really affordable prices and we get clubs and service groups that elect to volunteer their time for a range of community projects.

There are also less obvious benefits, like the campus’ radio station, KSUN. This streaming (internet) radio offers more than 15 shows during the week, from 8 a.m. to midnight and the programs are as varied as the student djs.

If you're at all curious about what students are talking about, then turn on your computer and find out.

In the meantime, because I believe in supporting budding members of the media, I recently spoke with the show host duo Caitlin Petrucelli and Chris DeLeon of The Mondays which airs on Monday mornings from 8 a.m.to 10 a.m.

Here’s a brief Q/A:

Find out what's happening in Rohnert Park-Cotatiwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Q: Why did you choose to host a radio show?

A: (Caitlin) I thought hosting a radio show would be a good opportunity for me to experience an aspect of Communications that is creative and fun.  I like that we get to make our show our own and can say that we have had hands on experience using the equipment and technology.

A: (Chris) I thought it would be a unique class to take at SSU.  I have a musical background and really enjoy working with the equipment so KSUN definitely appealed to my interests.  I figured I could only learn more by actually taking a radio class.

Q: What is the focus of The Mondays?

A: (Chris) Being that our radio show is Monday mornings at 8:00 a.m. our primary focus is to motivate listeners and help them start their week off right.  We begin with a segment that is called Motivational Mondays where we offer tips and tricks to help listeners stay motivated while playing upbeat songs.  Other segments include tech talk, where we discuss the gadget of the day, Mashup Monday where we play an original mash up of two songs and quirky story time where we share a funny news story and encourage listeners to call in about the topic.

Q: Are you looking for show guests?

A: (Caitlin) We would love show guests! Our show is meant to promote a sense of community.  We have a large support from businesses in the area which is why we try to give back by mentioning their services on our show.  We also love to talk about events that students at SSU may be interested in.  For us, the more the merrier!

Q: Why did you choose to be a communications major?

A: (Caitlin) I wanted to be a Communications major because I am interested in the field of Public Relations.  I really enjoy organization, working with friendly people and engaging socially with the public.  I would love to someday help with the event coordinating at a winery.

A: (Chris)  I chose Communications because I am interested in the music industry.  I want to study more about public relations so I can learn more about the promotional aspect of music.

Q: Do you want to have your own radio show one day?

A: (Caitlin) As much fun as it is to host a radio show together every Monday I wouldn’t say that this is a field I want to go into.  To me this is a fun and beneficial class that I get to be a part of, but realistically it’s not my calling.

A: (Chris) Yes, I would love to host my own radio show because I want to have my voice, opinions and ideas broadcasted.  I like the idea of making something my own and reaching out to others in the process.
