SSU TV's Hosting 2nd Film Fest

SSU's TV station sponsoring free film fest to highlight students 'best of' 2013.

The Oscars well behind us, attention turns to what’s happening locally with film. In an area dotted with film festivals of all shapes and sizes, it’s nice to see that Sonoma State University’s TV station is also throwing its collegial hat in the ring.

SSUTV Channel 27, a student run organization is accepting submissions now through April 15 for their 2nd Annual SSUTV Film Fest. It takes place 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 19 at The Commons, 1801 E. Cotati Avenue in Rohnert Park.

I recently asked Danielle Flores, publicist, about the event which is one of the campus station’s artistic endeavors.

Q: Why a film fest?

A: In the Communications department at Sonoma State there are many students with a wide variety of media interests. The Coms369 class (also known as SSUTV Channel 27) is divided into three group sections. One of those sections is the short film group. Last year's group was inspired to host the first film festival and this year's group has decided to make the event a tradition. The original idea was to highlight student works. Last year as a Teacher's Aide fr the class I was very involved in the Short Film group. I also worked with the PR group to help promote the first annual SSUTV Film Festival.

Q: What film formats will you show? Will the films be viewed back to back?

A: The films will appear in the order on a rank scale, based on a point system that is set up by a panel of four judges. We will lead up to the best film of the night. In between each film there will be a film from the students in the media class.

Q: Will you accept only films submitted by students?

A: The 5 to 15 minute films must be from current Sonoma State University students. As much as we would like to accept outside submissions, our primary goal is to encourage and support an interest in this class.

Q: Is this a competition? If so, are there awards? Who are the sponsors?

A: This is a friendly competition. There will be awards and small gift bags. The Judges are film or television professions who will review entries based on the characteristics of camera work, creativity, technicality, and story line.

Q: What do you hope festival attendees gain from watching the films?

A: I hope that they gain a new appreciation for student film work. They will also get to enjoy a night of free entertainment, including popcorn and drinks.

There is no entry fee and the festival entry form can be downloaded here. For more info: http://www.facebook.com/ssutvchannel27.
