How to Say A Big THANK YOU

November  -National Caregivers Month – ushers in holiday warmth. As you and your family gather around the table for Thanksgiving this year, there is one special group of exceptional people I’d like you to keep in mind: caregivers.

For many, the “thank you list” for caregivers can go on and on, but for those the starting point of gratitude is unclear. Lucky for you, I have some ideas about how to show our appreciation:

Encouragement: Uplifting words and offers to help are always welcome. Something like, “You are doing the best you can and I just want to let you know that I am here for you if you need anything.”

Errands: If you’re on the way to the grocery store, call up a caregiver and ask them if they need anything at the store. A little can go along ways.

Acknowledgement: Sometimes all a caregiver needs is acknowledgement that things have changed. It’s okay to let him or her have a little time to just vent and release some anxiety.

Social Outings: As much as a caregiver feels like they want to be with their loved one at all times, they need a little outing every once in a while to get their minds off their responsibilities. Schedule a movie or dinner night every month with them. Find  time to just be their friend.

Cards: Let them know especially over the holiday season, that you are thinking about them and are more than willing to help out. Holidays can be a lonely time for caregivers so letting them know they are special is the best gift.

As the holidays tiptoe closer I hope you find ways to share the season’s with the caregivers in your life.
