Young Squad Looking For Wins

Santa Rosa)-- Imagine being a first year head volleyball coach of a college program, with only 4 sophomores and 13 new freshmen, what would you do? For the answer, you need to ask new Head Women's Volleyball Coach Kaitlin Ferguson and she will give you the skinny. Despite, being a young team she likes her girls and they are off to a 4-2 start in 2013. Coach Ferguson played for Santa Rosa C in 2006-2008 and is a Montgomery High grad. During her 2007 season she helped lead the Bear Cubs to a 5th place finish at the state tournament. Certainly, she has some tough shoes to fill taking over for Kelly Wood, who left for the Humboldt State job.

On top of being the new coach try beating last years perfect 14-0 conference record, Big 8 Conference Championship and an impressive 23-3-overall season. It could happen, a state title perhaps. Regardless, the new coach is digging right in, pardon the pun. The freshman heavy team is becoming a close knit bunch. One reason for that is team bonding excursions, that included playing together this summer overlooking beautiful Lake Tahoe.

“We have good kids.” Head Coach
Kaitlin Ferguson says.. “The girls are selfless, many teams I have
been around are selfish and not selfless. That's impressive and this
group really wants to succeed.”

As you might imagine the three leaders on the Bear Cubs team are poised sophomores. Outside Hitter Megan Johnson from Washington has 39 kills and 19 digs. Two local products are Middle Blocker Lucia McInnis from Montgomery 22 kills, 2 digs, 1 block and former Windsor High Center Becca Steiner. She is a critical element that quarterbacks the offensive flow and leads the team with 29 digs.
