Explore the rich soundscapes of SSU’s Preserves while learning about the
changing ecology of Sonoma County through a dynamic multimedia encore
performance of "Soundscape Project." The perfect merger of art and science,
"Soundscape Project" uniquely blends video and acoustic recordings by world
renowned Bioacoustics expert, Dr. Bernie Krause.
Funded in part through the Green Music Center’s Academic Integration
Grant and the Sonoma County Community Foundation Grant, "Soundscape Project" is
an original dance piece featuring the environment of sounds captured at the
Fairfield Osborn Preserve, a 411-acre nature reserve on Sonoma Mountain.
With training from bioacoustics expert Dr. Bernie Krause, students from
Environmental Studies and Planning recorded a diversity of natural and man-made
sounds in the field. The recordings were archived and edited by Engineering
Students into a sound library. Composer Jesse Olsen Bay created a score from the
diversity of sounds which choreographers and dance students used as inspiration
to create this interpretive performance.
