Laguna Environmental Center Open House with Special Theme: Bones Day!

Our May Open House has a special theme – BONES! Join biologist Dr. Robert Rubin (Santa Rosa Junior College professor and Laguna Foundation board member) and Laguna Foundation docents from 11am-2pm for a hands-on examination of a wide variety of animal bones. Delve into the world of joints, skulls, and how various animal skeletons function (aka “skeletal morphology”). Using bones and skeletons of animals that live in the Laguna and elsewhere, we will learn what bones are, how they form a complete skeleton, and what the skeleton tells us about an animal’s movement and habitat. Flying, swimming, hopping, slithering, and crawling specimens large and small will be on display from the SRJC collection. Most of the bones will be available for interaction, including a special “pile of bones” for imagining new animals (“build an animal”)! Special talks on teeth and how animals move will be offered.

Bring a picnic to linger and take in the beautiful views and the rest of our Open House (10am-3pm). Enjoy a docent-led tour of this historic, District Protected site, learn about the natural and cultural history of the Laguna de Santa Rosa and historic Stone Farm. Birdwatch from the observation deck. Enjoy our expanded gift shop in Great Blue Heron Hall and the new art exhibit "Treescapes" (on display through June 29) of colorful paintings and prints by Green Greenwald. This is a working farm, so please leave your pets at home. The site is wheelchair accessible. No RSVP necessary.

This free “Bones” program is made possible through a partnership between the Laguna Foundation, LandPaths and the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District. The Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation & Open Space District protects land in Sonoma County. It is sponsored by the voters of Sonoma County who funded the District's work with a quarter-cent sales tax. This event is coordinated & guided by the Laguna Foundation with support from LandPaths.
