SRJC Women's Soccer Success is Contagious

9/23/13 SRJC Sports Media Relations

The 2013 Bear Cubs' Women Soccer team is again enjoying a reputation that they are tough to beat on the pitch. The defending Big 8 Conference Champion finished off a successful 2012 run at 15-4-2 overall. Prior, in 2011 they won the coveted State Championship. That type of success only cultivates more accolades and is why they were ranked 12th nationally in the Junior College Division 3 preseason polls. Currently, in California the Bear Cubs' sit at number 8 in the polls.

Naturally, the pressure of winning is something second year Head Coach Tracy Hamm can deal with. The former Cal Golden Bear outside back has her current team looking strong at. 5-1. They play in just their second home match of the year, against Consumes River College at 3:30pm on Tuesday. One of the strengths of this years team is that they came out strong in training camp and they have gelled together nicely.

“What I love about this team is their leadership.” Head Coach Tracy Hamm said.”We don't have captains, because our 27 players step up, take accountability and they love our team culture. We have fun, we laugh allot and the girls have a great desire for self improvement.”

The team's lone defeat was the 5th game of the season, a 2-0 loss at the hands of 9th ranked in Northern California, City College of San Francisco. The Bear Cubs have scored 12 goals in 6 games and are averaging 2 goals per game. So far, they have had 51 shots on goal and average 3.5 shots per game. The Bear Cubs have an impressive scoring attack led by Sophomore Christian Rebata. Her stellar play leads the Big 8 Conference and the team in scoring with 4 goals. The former Casa Grande High player helped lead the Gauchos to a 2010 North Coast Section Division 1 Championship. One year later, she played a pivotal role on the SRJC state title team, but red-shirted last season. Her identical twin sister Outside Back Courtney Rebata also red-shirted in 2012 and is a threat on the field, with 1 goal on the year.

In defense, Goal Keeper Ayelet Haar a Sophomore Sonoma State transfer has been solid playing in 6 games, 22 saves and allowing only 5 goals.
