You Said It: Golis Park is Best in Rohnert Park

The park, named for Paul Golis, garnered 29 percent of the vote in our recent "Best Local Park" contest.

G Park, named after one of Rohnert Park's founders, Paul Golis, is the best park in city, according to our Reader's Choice contest, where we asked readers to weigh in on the best local open space.

Local historian Tim Danisi's words explain how the city's vision for a park in every neighborhood emerged. He said:

"Fifty-five years ago, there was no Rohnert Park, only a vision in Paul Golis’s mind. In 1962, just five years after construction of the first homes on land between Cotati and Santa Rosa, the community of Rohnert Park was incorporated. With a population of 40,000 today, the city has matured into more than simply a bedroom community. The planned neighborhoods Paul Golis and Maurice Fredericks designed for the first two sections, known as A and B, each included a school, pool, and park. These designs inspired many future city planners."

And Golis Park is blooming! Thanks to community support, from the "Best Friends Canine Club" and the "G Park Guardians," the park is well-kept, and an amazing open space to spend an afternoon or for an evening walk.

G Park was adopted in the city's "Adopt-a-Park" program, that allows neighborhood organizations, schools and other nonprofits to volunteer to beautify their area parks.
