Support High for Measure E, According to Recent Poll

Sixty nine percent of Rohnert Park residents support extending Measure E, the half-cent sales tax first approved in 2010, according to a recent survey conducted by an opinion research company hired by the city.

Measure E has raised about $2.5 million per year for Rohnert Park, money that has been spent on police, street repair and other services. But in 2015, the sales tax will expire and the city wants to know the likelihood that voters will approve it once again.

“Survey results indicate residents are much more satisfied with the way things are going in Rohnert Park than they were 2009,” wrote Assistant City Manager Darrin Jenkins in a recent staff report.

“Two-thirds of Rohnert Park residents feel the city is headed in the right direction, which is a nearly 50 percent increase since 2009, and a substantial majority give the city government favorable ratings.”

Jenkins did point out that “residents remain concerned about state and local budget cuts and cuts to essential city services,” but said many felt it was important to generate a revenue source that could not be taken by the state.

“Maintaining and improving public safety services and putting the city on sound fiscal footing are seen as top priorities for the community,” he wrote.

The city hired Oakland-based opinion firm Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz, & Associates to conduct the survey. The cost of the phone survey was not immediately known and a call and email to City Manager Gabe Gonzalez were not returned Monday.
