Cotati-Rohnert Park School Board Takes First Look at Governor's Proposed Budget

Board schedules additional meetings to find solutions to budgetary concerns.

We are live blogging from the Jan. 11 Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District Board of Governors meeting. Currently the board is in closed session and will be reconvening in open session at 7 pm. Stay tuned for updates.

7:12 p.m. The board has not reconvened yet. There are twenty people here waiting for the meeting to start.

7:15 p.m. The board announces there where no actions taken in closed session.

7:20 p.m. Deveny Rohrea, the student representative to the board presents her report. 

 7:24 p.m. Discussion begins on the impact of the Gov. Brown's budget, which he released yesterday mornning. No cuts now for K-12 but if a special election on a tax measure fails it will means deeper cuts for our schools

7:29 p.m. Schools need to cut between $3.4 million in the next two years with the governor's proposed tax extension.

7:39 p.m. The board looks at what they can do to increase revenue and reduce spending. Suggestion range from parcel taxes to the closing of schools and the elimination of athletics programs.

7:42 p.m. The board takes a five minute break. Trustee Karyn Pully excuses her self from the meeting.

7:49 p.m. Director of special education Mr. Lawflen  discuses changes to the identification of students in need of special education.

7:54 p.m. Trustee Marc Orloff raises a question on the definition of non-nutritious food in a revision of guidelines for student wellness as it is not defined in the terms of the revision. 

7:56 p.m. The board discusses the replacement of two food serves freezers.The board requests information on the warranty life of the freezers currently in place. The board approves the consideration of the purchase of the new freezers. 

8:02 p.m. The board proposes adding additional meetings between now and march in order to focus on budgetary matters. 

8:13 p.m. Trustee Andrew Longmire is discussing his sight visit at Thomas Page Elementary and praises the combined kindergarden throughout first grade program. 

8:17 p.m. Trustee Wade Roach gives the third quarter auditor report. The report shows that there are strong fiscal concerns within the district.

8:20 p.m. "We are spending more then we are getting in revenue," Roach said.
