Rohnert Park Farmers Market Included in Growing Number of California Markets

According to a California Watch report, Farmers Markets — up 25 Percent in 2010 statewide —are increasingly filling holes in areas where fresh produce and affordable healthy foods aren't accessible to everyone. And, some are event taking food stamps.

A director of Farmers Markets nationwide, released last week by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, reported that there's 7,175 markets throughout the country — 729 in California alone, according to a story published today by the California Report. That's a 25 percent increase, or nearly 150 more places to find fresh, local produce than there were the year before.

How cool is it that Rohnert Park was one of them! Now in its second year, the Friday Night Farmers Market by the week. Packed with vendors and restaurants from Sonoma, Marin and Napa counties, this is really the place to be on a Friday night. The market was so popular last in 2010 that this year, organizers added live music and occasionally a shows movies afterward.

That leads us to a burning question — the Friday Night Farmers Market? Got a favorite vendor or cool reason you go? Tell us in the comments for an upcoming story, or submit a letter to the editor at angela.hart@patch.com.
