Local Volunteer Helps Vets Adjust After War

How was your life impacted by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001? Do you know a soldier who enlisted following 9/11, or perhaps someone else who was effected? Tell us in the comments or send an email to angela.hart@patch.com.

Shirley Carpinelli, 83, a volunteer receptionist for the Rohnert Park Vet Center, says an influx of post Sept. 11 war veterans are coming in to the counseling center seeking help for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The Vet Center program was established by the Federal government in 1979 as part of a move toward recognizing the issues that war veterans struggle with upon returning home from combat. The Vet Center's focus is on counseling. Carpinelli says many veterans who joined the military after the 9-11 terrorist attacks suffer from PTSD and don't know it until they begin counseling.
