Eat Local: Behind the Scenes at Sift

The Cotati cupcake spot offers traditional recipes and even mixes it up with things like frosting shots. Click through the photos for an inside peek. Got a favorite local business? Tell us who it is in the comments for an upcoming feature.

People have a sweet spot for Sift — the cupcake spot that opened downtown Cotati in 2008 and won the Food Network’s Cupcake Wars last January.

But don’t call it a bakery — it’s a “cupcakery” — and it’s getting more and more towns gooey-eyed for the artisan confections. Sift just opened up a new location downtown Napa, and it’s planning to expand even more throughout the Bay Area, according to Sift’s Andrea Ballus.

Sift offers up traditional cupcakes, but we suggest hitting up such concoctions like the Pink Champagne (raspberry and champagne), the Car Bomb (chocolate, Lagunitas imperial stout and Irish cream) and Pinking of You (bourbon and vanilla).

I'm not a big supporter of bakeries in general, but if you are talking about local businesses to spotlight: just go north of the cupcakes and turn into the driveway for Ace hardware. I believe it is the oldest hardware store in town. In that same complex is Yoga on the 101. This is an amazing Bikram Yoga studio that has a loyal and passionate teacher: John Reidy. He would be a great interview. On another person of local importance would be the incredible Linda Mish. She has operated Linda's House Preschool out of her home in D section for so many years that she has taught many children of former students! She is truly a positive contributor to the quality of life for so many local children. Look local and what treasures you find!!!

Another local place that has been around forever is the Cotati Rohnert Park co-op Nursery School. I went there when I was in preschool and now my son is going there. It is an amazing preschool with wonderful families who are so involved. Teacher Maureen (who is retiring this year) and Teacher Sherry always make the time at school so fun for the children and parents. So happy we get to be a part of such a wonderful place.

Yes! Miss Linda taught my son and had such a positive experience with her! My son is currently in sophomore at Technology High. Also, an important factor that was not mentioned about Sift bakery is that they serve gluten-free items.- an important source for my oldest son who has Celiac.
