East Bay Driver Swerves to Hit Cyclist, Arrested

Truck driver in Fremont hits cyclist who had filtered through traffic

Fremont police arrested a 52-year-old man on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon Wednesday evening after the man allegedly swerved his truck to hit a cyclist in the bike lane and caused the rider and his bike to roll down an embankment, a police spokeswoman said.

At about 6:55 p.m., the bicyclist had filtered through stopped traffic at the Automall Parkway and Osgood Road and moved into the bike lane before the light turned green.

According to police, when the light changed the driver, Mahinder Singh, of Fremont, allegedly veered into the bike lane, striking the bicyclist, who was thrown from his bike and down an embankment.

Police spokeswoman Geneva Bosquez said that a witness copied the truck's license plate before returning to help the 41-year-old victim, who sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

About 15 minutes after the crash, a police sergeant spotted the truck traveling northbound on Fremont Boulevard at Eggers Drive, Bosquez said. Officers conducted a high-risk enforcement stop, Bosquez said, and arrested Singh.
