Cotati declined to partner with Rohnert Park to raise funds for a new library. And now that Rohnert Park has its own library at City Plaza, some Cotati residents want one too.

Does Cotati need its own library?

Eight years ago, the city chose not to partner with Rohnert Park as it raised money for its shiny new library on Rohnert Park Expressway and State Farm Drive. But at a recent meeting of the Rohnert Park Library Advisory Board, the idea of a Cotati satellite branch was floated, according to the Community Voice.

One proposed location for a Cotati library is the community room located behind City Hall and owned by the city. The books, computer terminals and staff salaries would be paid by the Sonoma County Library Commission.

But the Sonoma County library system has faced cuts in funding, forcing it to close all branches on Mondays and reduce hours during other days. Library officials don’t expect funding to be restored for at least another two years.

Still, a Cotati library remains a goal for some residents, including former mayor Lisa Moore.
