New numbers released by police this month show traffic trends and problems in Rohnert Park. Data show speeding, running stop signs and distracted driving top the list of violations by motorists.

Police also reported that Rohnert Park Expressway — with a speed limit at 45 in some stretches — is one of the most dangerous streets in Rohnert Park.

Officers with the Department of Public Safety tallied 13 traffic collisions on RPX alone in a six-month period, from July to December 2011 — the most recent numbers available. The accidents were at busy traffic crossings, at intersections including Commerce Boulevard, State Farm and Redwood drives — the most of which occurred either between 9 and 10 a.m. and at 4 p.m.

Most infractions here were for speeding, talking or texting while driving, not stopping at a stop sign, red light and unlicensed driver infringements.

In the six-month period, police issued 168 citations for failing to stop at a stop sign, followed by 136 tickets for speeding and 128 for using a cell phone behind the wheel.

Police last year, for the first time, began collecting information on pedestrian tickets. According to the department's numbers, 26 tickets were written for pedestrians who walked during a "no walk sign." Seventeen drivers were written tickets for not yielding to a pedestrian attemtpting to cross a crosswalk.
