The fire, reported at 5:40 p.m. at the store at 265 Petaluma Avenue -- a Sebastopol landmark -- caused $2.8 million in damage to the building and its contents, Sebastopol Fire Chief Bill Braga said.

It started in straw bales outside the building then spread inside and burned more straw and hay bales, along with wood pellets, clothing and other items, Braga said.

It remains unknown what sparked the fire, but the blaze will be considered suspicious until a cause is determined, Braga said.

He said investigators hope to know the cause within a week.

The fire was controlled at 9:09 p.m. but firefighters were at the scene again Sunday morning looking for hot spots and conducting overhaul, Braga said.

About 80 firefighters from Gold Ridge, Graton, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol and Cal Fire responded to the blaze.

The store sold animal feed, clothing, footwear, wood, gas and pellet stoves, and fireplaces.
