Community Buzzing About Former Pacific Market Location

What would you like to see fill the former grocery?

Update: As of April 25, real estate sources from Keegan and Coppin said there's a new business coming in to the former Pacific Market this month — and there's only one week left! As we reported earlier this year, the longtime grocery in Mountain Shadows Shopping Plaza that shuttered last year is in negotiations with a new tenant.

There's been a lot of activity in the area. Find our most recent story below, and in the meantime, tell us — what would you like for the new location? Have you seen anything going on at Mountain Shadows Plaza?

I spoke to an agent from Keegan and Coppin recently, inquiring about the activity going on inside the . She didn't deny that there's a business coming to the vacant storefront, but said she couldn't say anything else. Everyone involved has signed confidentiality agreements, she said.

I posted that on Rohnert Park Patch's Facebook page, and dozens of people chimed in. The overwhelming response was that the community wants a Trader Joe's. Well, a few members of the City Council said last year that the grocery has said many times that it's not coming to Rohnert Park.

One real estate agent, who is also a Patch reader, did say that she has inside sources that have confirmed that it's a national supermarket chain coming in. , and a slew of readers said they'd support the small North Bay store, with locations in Petaluma and Santa Rosa currently.

"The potential opening of a G&G Supermarket in Rohnert Park would be predicated on the potential customer base being identified, the cost of the real estate and the overall financial viability of such a project," said Teejay Lowe, the chief executive officer for G&G Supermarkets. "Rohnert Park is a great community that supports local companies like G&G Supermarkets."

"G&G would be nice. Hopefully, the secrecy doesn't mean it's something controversial, like a Walmart Grocery store," said one reader. Three others said they too would like to see a G&G in town.

Residents also said Pacific Market's departure has had a big impact on the city's north end.

"I am a long time resident of H section and have sorely missed having a grocery store across the street. I would love a Trader Joe's but I'll take anything right now," he wrote.

"I don't know but there has been a lot of activity over there. I hope it's a nice market to help bring the whole center back to life," one woman wrote.

"As long as it is not another fitness club we are good. Would love it to be another market of some sort," wrote another.

"Anything that will help our shopping center!" another reader wrote. "More empty spaces then full — It's really sad!!"

Some said they'd like to see Williams Sonoma come in, others Molly Stones. Some just said simply: "Please no chains."

"We should keep the big chains out," one reader wrote.

What do you think? What would you like to see fill that space?

I heard it is a Fresh & Easy.

What the heck is fresh and easy? sounds good, but sounds a little like a quickie mart

My preference would always be TJ's, but that probably isn't going to happen, so G&G will do, minus the great prices and gourmet items available at TJ's.

Fresh and Easy, I have heard, is owned by Trader Joe's. It's different..with very reasonably priced items. http://www.freshandeasy.com/

A large corporation supermarket that could compete with Walmart. How's that?

I too have heard Fresh & Easy

A local market would be great in the area. I see how busy the little Starbucks is so I know there will be business. What I don't understand is why people keep mentioning a competition with Walmart? The Walmart that exists is is not that that great and the grocery section is worse then Target. The newer Super Walmarts actually have deli counters, bakeries, and you'd be surprised by the organic and specialty items they carry. Our local Walmart is an old, run down store.

I think any (grocery) store would be a great addition to RP! My vote is for TJ's, or something similar that is convenient AND affordable. Who cares if it's a chain, as long as there are new jobs and new life in that shopping center? It's a change for the better. I live all the way in Cotati and bank at Patelco so before I roll through Starbucks every couple of weeks after bank errands, I can park my car once, and shop for groceries on that end of town, too, yahoo!

No fresh&easy please as shoppers who's gone in east bay said their quality is more like Walmart; instead of "fresh". Plus, seems like they don't have much variety. A local organic store would be superb. Or even Sprouts Farmers Market if everyone would be so kind to email them for location requests please.

From what I have heard, G&G does not have the money to open a new store. We had a chance to visit a Fresh & Easy in Las Vegas this past week. We were blown away at the selection and prices they had. I think this would be a huge draw to this neighborhood and surrounding businesses.

What about a Whole Foods? They are national and would bring some competition to Olivers.

Thanks for your comment Kimberley, and other readers! Honestly, I've heard so many rumors but no one can confirm anything yet. Will keep on it and let you know as soon as I know. Thanks for your interest!

I heard another supermarket chain coming to the old Pacific Market location . We will have to wait I guess to see what rumors are true and what is not. I heard this from another location in the Plaza area. But what ever it is it will be welcomed !

They have a nice website. There's a store in Napa. I did a check of weekly specials at the Napa store (try zip 94559). They aren't G&G or Trader Joes but might be a nice alternative to Walmart. They don't show a "future" store in Rohnert Park on their website. I really wonder why any store would keep it a secret when advertising is an important part of any good business plan.... We'll see!

I emailed Fresh & Easy last year requesting their interest in the Pacific Market location. If it is them I believe the community will be rewarded. The Napa location is embraced as a local market for both it'd quality and prices. I hope Rohnert Park will do the same!

As long as they carry that delicious Pink Slime, I'm in

The Fresh & Easy website says they're owned by Tesco PLC. I couldn't find anything other than Fresh & Easy on any documents on the Tesco website. They sound like a good company either way! Trader Joe's doesn't admit to being owned by Tesco either.....

Fresh and Easy provides food for SRJC.. and its not fresh.
RC April 27, 2012 at 07:34 PM
THANK YOU so much for the informative comment Chris Champ!! Hearing from others, reading reviews, and quickly scanning through the stores in East Bay and Napa, F&E seems more of a lower quality generic version of TJs; but not as affordable as TJ's, not to mention way less variety. They say F&E has large selection of packaged food. How fresh can that be?

The only thing that will be successful is what I suggested for the Southwest Blvd shopping center: A Wal-Mart grocery.
Kimberley Peterson Roberts April 28, 2012 at 11:45 PM
Heard today it's final......... Fresh and Easy it is!
Michelle Lua June 01, 2012 at 09:54 PM
Actually, I went by the site today and nothing seems to be happening. I was expecting something in April (ha ha), but at least May. Now it's June. Any word?
RC June 16, 2012 at 06:02 AM
I just really hope it'll be a local grocery store, and not a chain. I really don't believe it will be a Fresh and Easy. They usually like to build their space from the ground up; and most of their locations are way smaller square footage than the old Pac Market.
