SRJC Jazz Quartet to Perform Nov. 2

Bennett Friedman, Santa Rosa Jr. College music instructor, to lead on-campus concert

 

The Music Department of Santa Rosa Junior College presents a jazz concert by the Bennett Friedman Quartet on Friday, November 2, at 8 p.m. in Newman Auditorium on the SRJC campus. Other musicians joining the saxophone instructor are Randy Vincent on guitar, Andrew Emer on bass and Lorca Hart on drums.

The performance will feature compositions of Lee Morgan, Chick Corea, Ivan Lins, and Johnny Mandel.

Saxophonist Bennett Friedman has taught Jazz Studies at Santa Rosa Junior College since 1977. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant for jazz composition. Friedman has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Stanford Jazz Workshop, the San Jose Jazz Festival, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, the Monterey Bay Blues Festival, and the Russian River Jazz Festival.

Randy Vincent, a popular Bay Area jazz guitarist, has been the jazz guitar teacher at Sonoma State University since 1981. He has performed with Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson, and Dizzy Gillespie. Vincent and Friedman have been performing together for more than 30 years.

Bassist Andrew Emer is a Sonoma County native who recently spent 10 years in New York performing with artists such as Lee Konitz, Billy Higgins, and Donald Byrd. Drummer Lorca Hart has performed with Hugh Masekela, the Clayton Brothers and Anthony Wilson.

Hart also directs the jazz ensemble at Healdsburg High School.

Admission to the event is $10 general and $5 for students and seniors. There is a $4 fee for parking on campus. Proceeds from the concert benefit the SRJC Foundation Jazz Studies Fund.
