Rohnert Park Weekend Planner August 12-14

From a fundraiser barbecue with a barbership quartet and the world premiere of Caliban Dreams to classic cars and Gravenstein apples, we've got you covered this weekend. See if there's something here for you.

Friday:

Join in on the summer fun at the for their 2nd Annual Senior Center BBQ Fundraiser. There will be food, fun, raffles & a bit of entertainment from our local Barber Shop Quartet!  All are welcome so bring the entire family and enjoy a lunch that includes your choice of hamburger or hot dog, potato salad, chips, soda or water & an ice cream sundae.

If you go: For tickets and more information visit the Senior Center front desk or call 707-585-6780. The barbecue is from 11:30 a.m.to 1 p.m. There’s limited space so only presale tickets will be sold. Don’t miss out. The barbecue is at , 6800 Hunter Drive, Suite A in Rohnert Park.

Friday and Sunday:

Join friends and family for this original tale, inspired by Shakespeare's "The Tempest" by librettist  Amanda Moody  and composer Clark Suprynowicz, with world-renowned tenor John Duykers originating the role of Caliban. The recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, "Caliban Dreams" receives its world premiere with twin productions in Berkeley and Sonoma. In a world of dreams and enchantment, the shape-shifting Ariel toils to thwart Caliban's quest to reclaim his island, his love, and to murder the sorcerer, Prospero. A do-or-die battle of wits, wills and spells, and an inquiry into the mystical power of Grace. The Person Theater performances benefit Cinnabar Theater, First Look Sonoma and Main Stage West.

If you go: General Admission is $40, Under 30 years (ID required at door) $15 and can be bought by clicking here. Fridays show begins at 8 p.m. and Sunday’s show begins at 2 p.m. at Person Theatre in , 1801 E Cotati Avenue in Rohnert Park.

Saturday:

See dozens of classic American cars and hot rods at the Cruise-In. There’s even a raffle for fun prizes!

If you go: This event is free and open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Straw Hat Pizza, 919 Golf Course Drive, in Rohnert Park.

Saturday and Sunday:

The Gravenstein Apple Fair continues the tradition of celebrating and exhibiting apples, combined with fantastic live music on two stages, great food, cooking demonstrations from local chefs, arts and crafts booths, a petting zoo, pony rides and so much more. Visitors experience the feeling of an old time country get-together, you can throw darts at apples, ride in a wagon pulled by plow horses, as well as shop the local artisan booths for handmade jewelry, clothing, pottery and gourmet goodies. Fun activities include the Hay Maze for the kids, kid focused performances, bee keeper displays, and a fine selection of local wine and brews for the adults. The great line-up of music features Gator Beat, Tom Rigney & Flambeau, Mitch Woods & His Rocket 88’s, Solid Air, Country All Stars, Joe Goldmark and the Seducers, The Fondettes, One World Band, Edge of Town, Grandpa Banana Band, and the String Rays. The fair also offers two additional stages with cooking demonstrations and a “Life on the Farm” stage with live farm shows that includes demonstrations and activities.

If you go: Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $5 for youth (6-12) and kids under 6 are free. Tickets are available at the door. Saturday’s hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday’s hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ragle Ranch Park, 500 Ragle Road in Sebastopol.

Sunday:

Last year, Cathie Haynes, habitat restorationist, offered tours of her garden, MuRefuge, a living example of sustainability and a haven for wildlife, with native plants, edible gardens, and foraging/egg-laying ducks!  This year she will be offering a tour again. The focus will be on California natives and whole ecology, with ample time for questions.  

If you go: Space is limited for each talk/tour so please register by emailing Cathie Haynes at afsp@sonic.net. The tour is from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. MuRefuge is at 5660 Hessel Avenue in Sebastopol. Directions will follow for those unfamiliar with MuRefuge’s location. The “fee” for attending is one bag of Organic Fox Farm Potting Soil obtainable from Harmony Farm Supply, Sebastopol or True Value Hardware in Cotati.
