Jazz Duo Lemish and Marsh Reunite For SSU CD-Release Concert

Toronto-based pianist and composer Noam Lemish will be touring the Bay Area next month, stopping at Sonoma State University to perform with jazz drummer and SSU faculty member George Marsh. The two are celebrating the release of their new CD, Nightfall, with a concert on July 21 at 2 p.m. in Warren Auditorium.

Lemish and Marsh recorded Nightfall a few years ago at Mesa Studios in Sebastopol. They finished up the project this spring with the help of a Kickstarter fund-raising campaign. They released their first album together, Yes And, in 2008.

The duo have collaborated many times since Lemish's undergraduate days at SSU. “We have a lot of fun together,” Marsh says. “ Noam hears what I’m doing as a percussionist melodically. We can breathe together quite easily, and I think we’re both telling a similar story.”

Noam Lemish began his classical and jazz studies in Israel. Later, he studied under the tutelage of W.A. Mathieu while completing his BA degree in music at Sonoma State University, where he studied with Will Johnson, Marilyn Thompson and the late Mel Graves. 

While completing his master’s degree in composition at the University of Toronto, he served as 2011-2012 Composer-In-Residence for “gamUT” – the University of Toronto Contemporary Music Ensemble. At present, Lemish is continuing his studies at the University of Toronto as a doctoral student in jazz performance-piano.

George Marsh is a San Francisco-based jazz drummer, composer, and educator, currently with the David Grisman Sextet. His recordings include those with John Abercrombie, Terry Riley, David Grisman, Jerry Garcia, Pauline Oliveros, Denny Zeitlin, Maria Muldaur, and many others. George has taught drumming and rhythm theory at the University of California at Santa Cruz and at Sonoma State University since 1982. He maintains a private studio in Santa Rosa, California.
