Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" Brings SSU Choral Season to a Climax

The exhilarating choral work, first performed in 1937, has become a classic of its type, should fill Weill Hall with lusty voice on May 5

The Sonoma State University Symphonic Chorus and Chamber Singers will perform Carl Orff’s timeless masterpiece "Carmina Burana" on May 5 at 4 p.m. in Weill Hall at the Green Music Center. Jenny Bent, Director of Choral Services, will conduct the combined voices of the SSU choruses and Maria Carrillo High School Women’s Choir.

Ever since the Latin words “Oh fortuna!” were first intoned in 1937, "Carmina Burana" has thrilled audiences the world over. It is one of the few choral compositions that draw from non-religious sources. Its 24 songs, organized into three sections, expound on topics of mass appeal including love, lust, drinking, nature’s beauty – in short, the human condition. The surprise is that the texts were written in the eleventh and twelfth centuries.

Vocal soloists will include Jennifer Thuman, Michael Morales, Ted Smith and Rodrigo Castillo – all students or alumni of the SSU choral/vocal program – with pianists Richard Riccardi and Yvonne Wormer and the SSU Percussion Ensemble.

Tickets are $10-$15 and available online here. To speak with a box office representative call (707) 664-2353 weekdays between 2-5 p.m.

Weill Hall at the Green Music Center is located at the north campus entrance off Rohnert Park Expressway. Parking is $5 and is available in Lots O and L.
