Things Are Buzzing In Cotati

A Cotati resident notified crews working on the city's SMART train depot about a large nest of bees inside of an old warehouse before it could be demolished.

As work began on Cotati’s new Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) train depot and the adjacent Sonoma County Transit Park and Ride facility, a neighbor advised city crews that a large nest of honey bees had an established hive in the old warehouse building occupying the site that is slated for demolition.

The city’s building inspector, Eric Seabrook, who is also an amateur beekeeper on his own time, came up with a creative approach.

Seabrook teamed up with other Sonoma County beekeepers and carefully captured the bees and relocated them, so that construction could commence.

The bees have a new home on Seabrook’s rural property where they can now live the sweet life.

Seabrook recently delivered honey from that hive. He calls it, “Right Side of the Tracks.”

Demolition began on the warehouse site last week and construction of the new facilities will be underway soon.

SMART train service is scheduled to begin in late 2015 / early 2016, while Cotati’s beautiful new Depot building will be completed in Spring 2014.
