Inaugural Cotati CacheFest and Cachers' Weekend

The newest form of scavenging hunting takes over Sonoma County this weekend.

Have you ever geocached? If you haven’t, you’ll get your chance this weekend, as the first annual Cotati Cachefest will be held this weekend on Saturday, May 5 at the Cotati Community Center.

The event will be held in the center’s Cotati Room, and will start at 5:15 p.m and is just one of many coinciding with Sonoma County Cachers’ Weekend.

Wondering what geocaching is? Here’s something that should help:

“Geocaching is one of the fastest-growing family activities worldwide. It is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS units or smartphones. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (usually a container) hidden at that location. There are over 2,000 geocaches hidden in Sonoma County.”

Here’s a list of other Sonoma County Cachers’ Weekend activities:

It starts with a morning ‘flash mob,’ a 15-minute mini-event near Coddingtown in Santa Rosa at 9:15 a.m.

Next is the seventh annual Sonoma County GeoRally, a driving event through some of the county’s most scenic back roads on a scavenger hunt-like search for information about the sights seen along the route. This event begins at 10:00 a.m. in Windsor, ending up in Cotati at 5:15 p.m.

On Sunday, the final event of the weekend is the Taylor Mountain Park Kick-Off & Breakfast Potluck on Sunday, May 5, at 8:30 a.m., celebrating the newest Sonoma County Regional Park. A series of geocaches of multiple types have been placed in the park.

The events are open to all ages, and will be partnered with experienced geocachers in order to learn how geocaching works. All events are free of charge.
