There is a massive push towards geoengineering to meet our water needs at the national level, and…Read More this plan will open the floodgates locally for MMWD's multi-million dollar desal plant (with intake next to a sewer outlet, a bay so polluted with pesticides, herbicides, toxic metals, pharmaceuticals etc. that fisherman are advised not to fish out of it, nor people to swim in it- a project which our struggling residents, towns and infrastructure can ill afford in a failing economy. We cannot accept the parameters offered by this 'plan'-Kinsey needs to back off from accusing those who oppose it-of racism-we should be thinking outside the box which has been created to discuss this 'plan'. i do not believe that it is a plan to afford 'affordable' housing- I believe that it is a backdoor to subvert local governments deciding how and where they allow new housing. There is no offer of monies to pay for the infrastructure-sewers, schools, water- and who pays the cost? I think that those of us who oppose this plan need to start a website and sign a pledge to walk door to door to educate people, Yes- we do need workforce housing -let's find a way to subsidize it and cut out the middlemen- let's make local policy- town by town to meet local needs, and-if we are going to spend millions, let's have a public discussion. Many of them. It should go to a vote. But the 'One Bay Area' planners must not be allowed to control the ballot language. It must be put together by a group from all sides.

I'm going to have to find time to call and get some tips in person! Thank you for the details above.…Read More I followed a low carb diet to lose 50 pounds about 8 years ago and it worked VERY well for me. Looking at labels was very enlightening. I've managed to keep the pounds off except for 10 that I go back and forth with since menopause. I started trying to just eat much healthier these days with a LOT more fresh fruit and veggies. I really enjoy this way of eating but it requires a lot of trips to the store for fresh items. What I'd like to do is find a good balance with dairy and protien to go with my fresh produce. I would also like to use grains efficiently in as far as avoiding the bad and using the good in moderation. There is an overabundance of information out there and I find it all confusing sometimes. Another thing I'd like to add is honey. Locally grown. But it's another SUGAR thing....sigh. I'm just gonna have to call you.
Kia April 16, 2013 at 02:54 pm
Hi Denise - great questions! I'll try to be brief.
Splenda is NOT sugar or food. It is a neurotoxin…Read More that also causes damage to the thymus gland. Also, numerous studies have shown that long term use of artificial sweeteners actually causes weight gain over time. (I'm happy to provide documentation on these statements if you like.)
Dairy is a tricky subject and could be the focus of a multi-volume text. Non-fat dairy products are higher in sugar, and are filled with non-nutritive gums and undigestible fibers to create what the industry calls "mouth feel" after the naturally occurring fats are removed. Basically what you end up with is a highly processed "food" full of damaged proteins and sugar. Instead, opt for organic, whole, unflavored, unsweetened REAL yogurt and add your own fresh or frozen fruit.
The Nature's Path Pumpkin Flax Plus granola has 37 grams of carbohydrate per serving. Let's break that down: on the label they claim 5g fiber and 10g sugar, so where is the remaining 22g of carbs? Those 22g are sugars that occur naturally so they don't have to list them as "added" sugars like the 10g on the label. That means you get a whopping 32g of glucose creating carbs per serving. It's also important to note that the serving size is 3/4 cup and most people don't limit themselves to that. For comparison, a Snickers Bar has 33g of carbohydrate and 27g of sugar.

By "we" I mean "we the people", the people of the United States. Our society…Read More must wake the hell up and start dealing with the problem of illegal immigration before it completely destroys our economy and government. Clearly the current administration does not intend to enforce the laws that "we the people" have passed. What good are laws if the highest levels of government choose to ignore them? Hey yoyo, once again for the record, Polk offered Santa Anna $52 million for the land eventually won…Read More via the Mexican War, but SA declined. Santa Anna was another in a long line of corrupt Mexican leaders, who was offered $1 to let Texas go, took the money and then re-negged. It was only then, when the Texians (as they were then called, and who were mostly former US citizens having gotten swindled by the Mexican version of homestead), that Polk sent Taylor and Scott to put the arm on him. It was only have the War that Polk then paid Mexico $21 million (I believe that was the number), having deducted the cost of the War from the previously offered number. I can't think of another country in human history who, having beaten an enemy fair and square, then paid them a dime for the land fairly won. US did it again in 1898.

http://www.dickmeister.com/id117.html
"Hard times continue at the University of California - except, of course, for UC's very well cared for administrators.
Their six-figure salaries continue to grow handsomely while the pay of those who teach and do most of the university's other work remains stagnant, and even as student tuition and fees increase and qualified students are being turned away."
I am not sure when government jobs began earning at the same level as private industry jobs. The difference in pay use to be justified by the better retirement and benefit package. Now it seems they get a private industry salary and all the other perks that go with a tax payer subsidized job.
At the very bottom of the pyramid are the students. If we can't cut back salaries to increase classes and give students what they need then our system is failing.

Here is a link to an article by the teachers union. http://www.cft.org/universities/394-uc-budget-qa.html

"Q: Is it true that we are going to have our salaries reduced?
A: It is very possible that the UC may decide to cut all salaries 5% or use a furlough system to accomplish the same thing. However, in the case of lecturers and librarians, the university has to negotiate any salary reduction.
Q: If the UC is broke, why would the union resist a 5% salary reduction?
A: We do not think the university is broke, and we want them to prove to us that they need to make these cuts.
Q: Why do you think they are not broke?
A: The university brings in billions of dollars every year in profits from medical services, extension programs, parking, housing, research, patents, and fund raising. They are just trying to maintain a high level of disposable income, while they claim they are poor. (see http://universityprobe.org/2009/04/budget-lies-a-letter-to-the-president-of-uc/)"
